  • Make sure wall is clean, dust-free and dry before you begin

Step By Step Guide:

Step 1: Mask Trim

Accent Shapes

Mask along trim, baseboards and non-textured ceilings with ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape Advanced Delicate Surface.

Step 2: Paint Basecoat

Accent Wall Frames & Chair Rail

Paint the basecoat (the lightest color) over the entire wall and let it dry for 24 hours. Hint: this will be the color of your accent frames and chair rail.

Step 3: Mask Chair Rail

Accent Wall Frames & Chair Rail

Measure from the floor to the desired height of your chair rail. Make a small pencil mark, then use a level and a pencil to draw the top rail edge. Tape the rail line. Hint: use tape to determine the width of your chair rail.

Step 4: Mark the Corners

Accent Walls

Use a tape measure and a pencil to measure out and mark the corners of each frame. Hint: the corners will be for the outer edge of each frame, so plan your spacing accordingly.

Step 5: Draw Outlines

Cabinet Update

Use a level and a pencil to draw horizontal lines along the top and bottom edges of each frame. Then draw the vertical lines to complete each frame.

Step 6: Mask Frames

Cabinet Update

Using the pencil lines as the outside border, tape each frame. Press down to seal the edges of your tape, paying particular attention to where the tape overlaps. Hint: use a tape size that matches your desired frame width.

Step 7: Paint Frames

Checkerboard Chair Rail

Paint the wall outside of each frame (red in the example). Then paint the frame interiors (orange in the example). Let paint dry for 24 hours.

Step 8: Remove Tape

Decorative Striped Patterns

Remove tape at a 45° angle. If adhesive begins to transfer, use a 90° angle. If paint starts to lift, use a sharp tool to cut along the tape edge.

Helpful Hints

  • Consider the size of the room and the potential size of each frame. On a smaller wall, you may want one large frame. Very large walls may welcome several small or medium-sized frames.
  • You may decide to vary the sizes and shapes of your frames, using both squares and rectangles.
  • Sketch your vision on paper, drawn to scale. This will give you a blueprint of how the selected frame shapes, widths, and spacing will fit onto your walls.
  • Use tape to bring your vision to life and see it come together before you paint.

  • Choose colors that work well together and enhance the base color of your wall.
  • Before you buy, consider bringing home paint swatches or samples, to get an idea of how the colors will look together in your space. It's a great way to avoid time-consuming painting mistakes.

Widen the Rail

Checkerboard Chair Rail

Use the tape width to determine the thickness of the chair rail. Consider starting with the 2'' tape. For a thicker chair rail, apply multiple strips of tape

Frame It Up

Decorative Striped Patterns

From a delicate border to a more robust look, use the tape width to create the desired thickness of the frame. Consider starting with 1.5'' tape.

  • Accessorize your room with pillows, throws, candles and/or vases in colors that complement your new accent frames.
  • Draw atention to large prints or paintings by hanging them in the center of each accent frame.
