Create a gourmet kitchen without a major overhaul. With a few coats of paint and a change of accessories,
you'll instantly liven up your space and create a more modern style. Masking in and around cabinets is easier when you use ScotchBlue™
Painter's Tape.
Mask walls around cabinets, as well as cabinet inner shelves and sides, with ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape. Hint: use the tape selector chart to find the right tape for your project.
Step 2: Prime Frames
Apply a coat of primer to the cabinet frames per manufacturer instructions. Let the primer dry for 24 hours. Hint: for best results, follow the wood grain as you prime frames and cabinets.
Step 3: Prime Doors
Make sure you have removed all hardware (hinges, door pulls). Apply primer to cabinet doors, and let them dry for 24 hours.
Step 4: Paint Frames
Apply the first coat of paint to the cabinet frames and let the paint dry for at least 4 hours. Apply a second coat and let that dry for 24 hours.
Step 5: Paint Doors
Paint the cabinet doors and let them dry for 4 hours. Apply a second coat of paint and let that dry for 24 hours.
Step 6: Remove Tape
Remove tape at a 45° angle. If adhesive begins to transfer, use a 90° angle. If paint starts to lift, use a sharp tool to cut along the painted tape edge.
Step 7: Reassemble
Re-attach cabinet hinges and then re-hang your cabinet doors. Finalize by attaching your new or existing door pulls.
Helpful Hints
Paint Pointers
Choose colors that will complement and enhance your existing countertops and flooring.
Consider that lighter colors make a room look more open, while darker colors add a warmth that transforms a look from dated to modern and sophisticated.
High-gloss and semi-gloss paints are the way to go for cabinets. They are easy to clean and add a rich finish.
Use a high quality brush. The better the brush, the better the finish.
TAPE TIPS
Resist the Urge to Stretch
When masking any surface, pull tape off the roll a few feet at a time. Avoid stretching the tape, as this can cause it to lift up or break.
Get into the Grooves
If your cabinets require masking along a tile backsplash, press the tape into the grooves as you go. This will help the tape adhere properly to prevent paint bleed.
DÉCOR IDEAS
Add a tile backsplash and under-cabinet lights. Both are functional and design-oriented, and both deliver a big bang for your buck.
Replace fixtures like faucets, lighting, and cabinet door handles to give your room an instant and cost-effective makeover.
