1. Painting with more than two colours

Painting with more than 2 colours

A great way to bring personality and a fun sense of energy to your space is by using more than two colours. Add dimension to a single accent wall or character to a bedroom or bathroom. You can even use multiple paint colours to create designs on furniture, like a dresser or outdoor table.

Create your own style

Find links to wall patterns and design ideas on our Creative Techniques page. Then get started with the steps below. For freshly painted surfaces (at least 24 hours old) we recommend ScotchBlue™ WALLS + WOOD FLOORS Painter’s Tape. Also, be sure to visit our How to tape page for basic paint prep and tape removal tips.

Step by step

  • Draw

    Draw

Mark your pattern on the wall with a pencil and ruler or stencil. Then place a dab of paint in each section of the pattern to help you keep track of which colour goes where.

  • A woman using ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape to outline shapes on a wall.

    Tape

Place the tape on the outside edge of the shape you are going to paint first. To cut tape easily, hold a putty knife against the tape at the angle you want to cut it, and then tear the tape along the line of the blade.

  • A woman rolling paint inside shapes on a wall.

    Paint

Apply your first paint colour, let it dry at least 24 hours, and then remove your tape.

  • Repeat

    Repeat

Repeat this process for your second and third colour: tape, paint, let the paint dry for 24 hours, and then remove your tape.
