How It Began
Richard Drew, a 3M scientist, invented masking tape in 1925. It was originally developed for use in two-toned painting on automobiles.
The product now known as ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape was invented by 3M in 1988. It was designed for professional painters to use in residential and commercial painting applications. ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tapes revolutionized the masking tape industry because it was the first tape to provide protection from UV and allow for tape to remain on the masked surface for an extended time period.
