3M thinks, works, and acts in ways to help the world be more sustainable, and the Consumer Business team is no different. We are committed to using 3M science to improve lives and are constantly working to build sustainability into our manufacturing operations, products, and packaging for the future. We are proud that our Hutchinson, Minnesota plant, which makes ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tapes, achieved zero landfill status in 2020. In addition to waste-reduction efforts, several of our facilities have made notable reductions in water or energy use.
We have a long track record of reusing and recycling the by-products generated during the manufacturing of our products:
Scotch™ Brand uses a variety of alternative adhesives and coatings, including solvent-free, plant-based and water-based options, to help reduce factory emissions with fewer solvents:
We are also building Sustainability Value Commitments into the products we sell to consumers, demonstrating how that product drives impact for the greater good. Examples of Sustainability Value Commitments for new products include reusability, recyclability, energy/waste/water savings, responsible sourcing, and/or recycled or renewable raw materials.
Scotch® Brand has a full line of painter’s and masking tapes to help people conquer whatever surface they’re painting. Our suite of tapes include many sustainability aspects including being made with post-consumer waste and renewable resources, solvent-free adhesive, natural rubber and recycled fiber.
The best paint jobs are those that elevate their surroundings. They take an average surface and make it so much more. That’s why Scotch® Painter's Tape teamed up with the Taj Gibson Foundation (Pro Basketball Player), Project Backboard and artist Steph Costello to transform a basketball court in Brooklyn, New York.
With a few cans of paint, a handful of volunteers, and a whole lot of Scotch® Painter’s Tape, we created a vibrant and welcoming gathering space for local community members!
“This neighborhood means a lot to me. There’s so many different memories. It was a place that taught me good values. They raised me. The court has had some ups and downs over the years. I was just seeing it deteriorate over time.” – Taj Gibson
“I want people to feel a sense of energy, a sense of joy. We had some kids come by and one of the young girls said, I can see color from my window now, I’m so excited! When you put effort and care into something, children recognize that.” – Steph Costello
“Project Backboard’s mission is to make sure that all communities have a safe and inviting place to play community basketball.” – Dan Peterson
